I just signed up for Grok, which is X’s new AI platform. It’s an upgrade from my normal blue checked account on X. A ways back I signed up for ChatGPT to see what all the excitement was about. Since I now have easy access to two different AI platforms, I decided I would have some fun with comparing the platforms. Grok is first, followed by ChatGPT second with identical questions. Problems were highlighted in yellow and I’ll explain after the examples.
Grok did pretty well, but I’d have two criticisms of this response. The “is” should be “was”. I’ve been retired for twenty years. Another sort of annoying thing Grok does is adds a post at the bottom of the AI response. In this case, something about a kicker named Bass. Not sure why this was added to the response.
ChatGPT used the word former, which is correct. The rest of the post is correct and I love the disclaimer in the last paragraph that things change over time, so it’s good to check recent sources for latest updates on Tom Basso. Good way to remind users that AI is not perfect.
Grok answered this question fairly well. A few nice examples and some disclaimers that trend following, like any strategy, has strengths and weaknesses over various market conditions.
Another great response on the question from ChatGPT. I couldn’t find fault with the answer. Nice bullet point list on various aspects of trend following a good ending disclaimer.
Now let’s try to make it difficult for the AI platforms and ask a present time question about something that no longer exists. Trendstat, my firm, closed down in 2003 when I retired.
This answer from Grok correctly puts Trendstat into history with the “was” verb. The additional post was added at the end, but at least this one was related to my interview with Richard Moglen, which was a good one. All my interviews are located at: https://enjoytheride.world/interviews/ if you want to view them.
Mmmm, ChatGPT is now a bit confused. Below is a simple DuckDuckGo search on Trendstat Capital Management and there’s information there about Trendstat closing in 2003. ChatGPT either is answering my question literally and there “is” no Trendstat Capital Management currently or it’s not handling historical information as well as Grok did above.
Next, let’s see what they think about my website: enjoytheride.world:
Looks good to me. Now let’s try ChatGPT
More problems with the database it seems. Enjoytheride.world is a current website. The AI platform should be able to scan the site for all sorts of information about the site and return it. However, it falls short on this one.
Some Thoughts:
There’s no doubt that Artificial Intelligence is coming at us at supersonic speed. We will all be using more of it in everyday life embedded in all sorts of everyday devices around us. However, this simplistic example of a few questions that I really do know the answers to points out that we all should take AI as one resource and should be on guard for potential weak or incorrect answers. Both these platforms had problems. Grok was a little better, but with my 52+K followers on X, Grok may have more material to draw on in these areas than ChatGPT does.
My concerns is that the term Artificial Intelligence is misleading and causes the user to blindly think of the AI platforms’ answers as intelligence. I try to think of AI as standing for Assumed Information, because, as I pointed out above, it’s not perfect. If you rely solely on AI to perform a task, I would suggest at this point focusing AI on black and white, yes or no, mathematical or logical queries that can be returned with complete clarity. The more general the request, the more room for the platforms to be off and give you some bad information.
Enjoy the ride!
ChatGPT used to have some simple programming capability, but that has been deactivated. I find if I work at it that I can write more concisely than it can. I may use it for ad-writing as I revive the real estate LLC, but I am still uncertain as to how wonderful this version of AI technology is. It was fantastic when trading patterns in price action using NeuroShell Trader though. Great article.
Great post. In a way (just like trading and life?), to draw an analogy, we end up chasing what is (or seems) easy vs sticking to what's simple.
